Historical Monuments and interesting sites in Rome
Don’t miss out on the monuments and one of a kind sites that Rome has to offer, that render this capital city especially fascinating and spectacular, all easily reached from the Hotel Tuscolana.
» Le Catacombs of Rome
Catacombs are antique underground cemeteries, cut out of volcanic rock (tufo) once used by Christian communities. Their first apparition can be dated to the 2nd Century. Originally, they simply served as the housing for funerary remains. During the period of Christian persecution they also served as a hidden shelter during the celebration of the Eucharist.
» Cinecittà Studios
The Cinecittà studios are located near the centre of Rome, in an area stretching over 400.000 mq. From 1937 Cinecittà has been invoking emotion through film. Many famous film directors, both Italian and International, such as Federico Fellini, Rossellini, Visconti, Francis F. Coppola and Martin Scorsese have taken part in its history.
Today the studios represent the most important cinematographic studios in Europe in terms of full-cycle films, television programs, dramas, commercials and video clips. Guided tours can be organized for school groups from October to June.
» San Giovanni in Laterano
The Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome and is also the official ecclesiastical headquarters of the Pope. It is the most antique basilica in the West, dating to the 4th century, and is flanked by the Lateranense Cloister, the Laterano Baptistery and the Palazzo of the Laterano. In the centre of the Piazza of San Giovanni in Laterano the tallest and most antique obelisk in Rome can be admired. It is also the fascinating location of music events and manifestations, like the celebrated "May 1st" festival.
» The Verano Cemetery
Verano is the monumental cemetery in Rome. It is located in the Tiburtino neighborhood, near the San Lorenzo zone and also near the Basilica of San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura (outside of the walls). The area has always been a zone for sepulture. And still today, within the actual cemetery, we can find the Santa Ciriaca catacomb. The modern day cemetery was created during the reign of Napoleon in the first decade of the 19th century.
» The Ardeatine Graves
On March 24th 1944, the Nazi troupes from Germany massacred 335 Italian civilians and soldiers. The Ardeatine graves commemorate this event. The act was taken out by the German troupes as a result of the partisan attacks on the German troupes the day before on Via Rasella in Rome. This violent event became the symbol of all of the atrocious acts undertaken during the German occupation.
The "Fosse Ardeatine", antique caves near Via Ardeatina, chosen for hiding the cadavers during the horrendous event, have become a memorial and a true statement against violence.
The Catacombs...
Carved out of volcanic rock, tufo, they were the antique underground cemeteries of antiquity used especially for Christian rituals.
The Via Appia Antica...
Non lontano da Via Tuscolana, la via Appia Antica collegava Roma a Brindisi, principale porta verso l'oriente.
